How to Make Your Luxury Candles Last Longer: 7 Essential Candle Care Tips

A luxury candle brings more than fragrance to your home. It creates a mood, adds a warm glow and turns an ordinary evening into a moment to enjoy.

A little care helps you get the most from every burn. From trimming the wick to choosing the right place for your candle, these seven simple habits will help you enjoy your favourite fragrance for longer.

1. Give the first burn time and attention

On the first burn, allow the wax to melt evenly across the surface, following the burning instructions supplied with your candle.

Extinguishing a candle while only a small pool has melted around the wick can contribute to tunnelling, where wax remains around the sides of the vessel.

Always stay within the maximum burn time on the label. If the wax hasn’t reached the edges by then, extinguish the candle and let it cool.

2. Trim the wick before each burn

Before lighting your candle, check that the wax is cool and trim the wick to the length recommended on its care label.

A wick that is too long can produce an oversized flame, smoke and soot. Remove any loose wick trimmings before lighting so the wax stays free of debris.

A wick trimmer makes this a simple part of your candle-lighting ritual.

3. Keep your candle away from draughts

Place your candle away from open windows, fans and busy walkways.

Moving air can make the flame flicker and cause the wax to melt unevenly. Choose a stable, heat-resistant surface, with plenty of space away from curtains, furnishings and anything that could catch fire.

Keep burning candles out of reach of children and pets, and never leave them unattended.

4. Follow the recommended burn time

Longer burning sessions aren’t always better. Follow the maximum burn time stated on your candle’s label, then extinguish it and allow it to cool fully before relighting.

Avoid moving your candle while it is lit or while the wax is still liquid. The vessel and melted wax may remain hot after the flame has gone out.

Let your candle be part of a relaxed routine: light it while you unwind, enjoy its fragrance, then extinguish it before leaving the room or going to sleep.

5. Keep the wax clean

Before each burn, check the surface for dust, matches or loose wick fragments and remove them when the wax is cool.

Keep decorative items, dried flowers and other materials out of the wax. A clean candle is easier to care for and helps keep unwanted debris away from the flame.

If your candle has a lid, replace it only once the candle has been extinguished and cooled completely.

6. Store your candle thoughtfully

When you aren’t using it, keep your candle in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and sources of heat.

This helps protect its appearance between burns. A lid can also help keep dust off the surface.

Avoid leaving candles on sunny windowsills or close to radiators, where warmth may soften the wax.

7. Know when to stop burning

It can be tempting to use every last bit of wax, but always stop at the minimum remaining-wax level specified on your candle’s safety label.

Don’t continue burning once that point is reached, and don’t try to burn the vessel dry.

When your candle is finished, allow it to cool completely and follow any cleaning or reuse guidance supplied with it.

Make candle care part of your ritual

Candle care doesn’t need to be complicated. A trimmed wick, a clean surface, a thoughtful position and attention to the label can make a difference to how you enjoy your candle.
